A
- ADMarket Terms
- Authorized Dealer. A retailer officially authorized by a watch brand to sell their products new, with manufacturer warranty. AD allocation of popular models is highly competitive.
- AllocationMarket Terms
- The number of specific watch models assigned to an authorized dealer by the brand. Dealers with strong allocation access can source highly sought-after pieces at retail price.
- ArbitragePricing Terms
- The practice of buying a watch in one market (e.g., auction) and selling it in another (e.g., retail) to profit from price differences. Requires deep market knowledge and fast execution.
B
- B3AFPricing Terms
- Bottom 3 After Fees. A pricing methodology that identifies the lowest three comparable sold listings on eBay, then subtracts platform fees and shipping costs to calculate the true wholesale floor price for a watch.
- BezelWatch Anatomy
- The ring surrounding the watch crystal. Can be fixed or rotating. Dive watches use a unidirectional rotating bezel for timing; dress watches often have a fixed, polished bezel.
- Box & PapersTrading Terms
- The original packaging (box) and documentation (warranty card, manuals, receipt) that came with a watch at purchase. A complete set with box and papers typically adds 10-20% to resale value.
- BraceletWatch Anatomy
- A metal band attached to the watch case. Common styles include Oyster (Rolex), Jubilee, President, and integrated designs. Original bracelet condition significantly affects resale value.
C
- CaliberWatch Anatomy
- The specific movement (mechanism) inside a watch, identified by a reference number. For example, Rolex caliber 3235 is the movement used in the modern Submariner.
- CasebackWatch Anatomy
- The rear cover of the watch case. Can be solid (common on Rolex) or transparent/exhibition (showing the movement). Engravings on the caseback may include serial numbers and model references.
- COATrading Terms
- Certificate of Authenticity. A document from a qualified watchmaker, brand service center, or authentication service confirming a watch is genuine. Essential for high-value transactions.
- ComplicationWatch Anatomy
- Any function on a watch beyond basic timekeeping. Common complications include chronograph (stopwatch), date display, moon phase, GMT/dual time zone, and minute repeater.
- ConsignmentTrading Terms
- An arrangement where a watch owner places their piece with a dealer for sale. The dealer sells on behalf of the owner and takes a commission (typically 5-15%) upon sale.
- COSC CertificationDocumentation
- Contrôle Officiel Suisse des Chronomètres. An independent Swiss testing institute that certifies watches meeting strict accuracy standards (-4/+6 seconds per day). COSC-certified movements carry a premium.
- CrownWatch Anatomy
- The knob on the side of the watch used to set the time, date, and wind the movement. Screw-down crowns provide water resistance by threading into the case.
- CrystalWatch Anatomy
- The transparent cover over the watch dial. Modern luxury watches use sapphire crystal (extremely scratch-resistant) while vintage pieces may use acrylic or mineral glass.
D
- Demand VelocityPricing Terms
- A measure of how quickly watches of a specific reference are selling in the market, expressed as sales per month. High velocity indicates strong demand and faster inventory turnover.
- DialWatch Anatomy
- The face of the watch displaying the time. Dial variations (color, texture, material) significantly affect value. Rare dial variants can command substantial premiums.
F
- FlipTrading Terms
- A quick buy-and-resell transaction aimed at capturing profit from price differences between markets or temporary underpricing. Successful flipping requires deep market knowledge.
- FlippingMarket Terms
- Buying a watch with the intent to resell quickly for profit, often taking advantage of market inefficiencies or limited availability. Contrasts with collecting or long-term holding.
- Floor PricePricing Terms
- The lowest realistic price a watch can be expected to sell for in the current market. Mazalgo calculates this using the B3AF methodology based on actual sold data.
G
- Geneva SealDocumentation
- Poinçon de Genève. A quality certification for watch movements made in the Canton of Geneva, verifying craftsmanship, decoration, and accuracy standards. Exclusive to Geneva-based manufacturers.
- Grey MarketMarket Terms
- The secondary market for watches sold outside authorized dealer channels. Includes pre-owned sales, private dealers, and online platforms. Prices are set by supply and demand, not MSRP.
H
- Hammer PricePricing Terms
- The final bid price at auction before buyer's premium and taxes are added. The actual cost to the buyer is the hammer price plus all fees.
- Hype WatchMarket Terms
- A timepiece experiencing demand driven more by social media attention and trend-following than intrinsic horological value. Hype watches can see volatile price swings.
L
- Lug-to-LugWatch Anatomy
- The total length of the watch case measured from the tip of one lug to the opposite lug. This measurement determines how a watch wears on the wrist — more important than case diameter for fit.
M
- MarginPricing Terms
- The difference between the purchase price and sale price of a watch, expressed as a percentage. Healthy margins in watch trading typically range from 8-25% depending on volume and brand.
- Market MoverMarket Terms
- A watch reference experiencing significant price changes — either rapid appreciation or depreciation. Tracking market movers helps dealers time buy and sell decisions.
- Market ValuePricing Terms
- The current price a watch would fetch in an arms-length transaction between willing buyer and seller. Determined by recent comparable sales, condition, and completeness.
- MemoTrading Terms
- A short-term consignment arrangement between dealers where watches are sent 'on memo' for inspection or to show to potential buyers, with the expectation of return or payment within a set period.
- MovementWatch Anatomy
- The internal mechanism that powers the watch. Types include automatic (self-winding via rotor), manual (hand-wound), and quartz (battery-powered). Movement quality is a primary value driver.
- MSRPPricing Terms
- Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price. The price set by the watch brand for authorized dealer sales. Many popular models trade above MSRP on the secondary market.
N
- NOSMarket Terms
- New Old Stock. A watch that was manufactured years ago but never sold or worn. NOS pieces are highly collectible, especially discontinued references, as they represent factory-fresh condition.
P
- Power ReserveWatch Anatomy
- The length of time a fully wound watch will run before stopping. Typical luxury watches have 40-72 hour reserves, while some high-end pieces exceed 10 days.
- Pre-OwnedMarket Terms
- A watch that has been previously sold and worn. Condition, service history, and completeness (box, papers) significantly affect pre-owned value.
- ProvenanceTrading Terms
- The documented history of ownership and origin of a watch. Strong provenance — especially celebrity or historically significant ownership — can dramatically increase value.
- Purchase AgreementDocumentation
- A formal document outlining the terms of a watch sale including price, condition, return policy, and any warranties. Essential for dealer-to-dealer and high-value private transactions.
R
- Reference NumberDocumentation
- A unique alphanumeric code assigned by the manufacturer to identify a specific watch model and its specifications. For example, Rolex 126610LN identifies the current-production black Submariner Date.
- RotorWatch Anatomy
- A semicircular weight in automatic movements that swings with wrist motion to wind the mainspring. Custom or decorated rotors are a hallmark of high-end watchmaking.
S
- Serial NumberDocumentation
- A unique identifier engraved on the watch case, specific to that individual piece. Used to verify authenticity, track service history, and confirm the watch hasn't been reported stolen.
- Service HistoryDocumentation
- A record of all maintenance and repairs performed on a watch, ideally by authorized service centers. Complete service history with documentation increases buyer confidence and resale value.
T
- Trust ScoreTrading Terms
- A rating assigned to buyers or sellers based on transaction history, feedback, and verification status. Higher trust scores reduce counterparty risk in watch trading.
W
- WaitlistMarket Terms
- A queue maintained by authorized dealers for high-demand watches with limited production. Waitlist times for popular models like the Rolex Daytona can exceed several years.
- Warranty CardDocumentation
- The official card provided by the brand at purchase, documenting the watch reference, serial number, purchase date, and selling dealer. A stamped warranty card is a key completeness factor for resale.
- Wholesale PricePricing Terms
- The price a dealer pays to acquire a watch from another dealer, typically below retail and secondary market prices. Wholesale transactions require established trust and volume.
- WTBTrading Terms
- Want to Buy. A post or listing from a buyer actively seeking a specific watch. WTB posts on forums like Reddit r/watchexchange and WatchUSeek are key demand signals for dealers.
- WTSTrading Terms
- Want to Sell. A listing from a seller offering a watch for sale, typically on watch forums and marketplaces. WTS posts include price, condition, and photos.
- WTTTrading Terms
- Want to Trade. A post from someone looking to exchange one watch for another, potentially with cash added on either side. Common on Reddit r/watchexchange.
